DISSERTATION RESEARCH
Investigating amorphous precursor transformation to calcite in biomineralizing systems
Increasing evidence from studies of biominerals extracted from calcifying organisms show that amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) plays a key role in the initial formation of carbonate minerals and in shaping them into complex morphologies. Our goal is to understand the physical basis of ACC to crystalline polymorph transformation and in particular understand the roles of water, biological surfaces and impurities.
